Abstract
501,392. Spray - producers. MEECH, T., and BURDETTE & CO., Ltd. July 23, 1938, No. 21946. [Class 69 (iii)] In spray - producers of the kind in which the needle valve 14 for the liquid is operated by the air pressure, the stem of the needle valve carries a spring - controlled crosshead 22 which is acted upon by the stems of a plurality of pneumatic rams 21 the heads of which move in separate air chambers 19 connected to the air inlet 4, the air having no access to the chamber 17 in which the cross-head moves or to the bore through which the stem of the needle valve passes. The rear body portion 1 of the apparatus has a screwed ring 3 which screws into an annular recess 13 in the spraying head 2 and is connected by two tubular pillars 16 with the chamber 17 which has bores 19 closed by plugs 20 through which pass the stems of the rams. The ram heads are of conical shape conforming to seatings in the plugs 20 so as to seal the bores in the plugs when in' their upper position. Due to the lost motion between the ends of the ram stems and the cross-head 22 the air is supplied through the nozzle openings 8 before the liquid valve is opened. The valve stem 14 passes through a gland 15 and is in threaded engagement with the cross-head 22, rotation of which is prevented by pins 23 engaging holes 24. The stem passes freely through the end cover 18 and terminates in a knob 26. By rotating the knob 23 the crosshead 22 is adjusted on the valve stem 14 to alter the valve opening, and by pulling the knob 26 outwardly against' the spring 25 the needle valve can be retracted from the discharge hole of the nipple 9 to remove obstructions.
