Abstract
504,120. Metal vapour apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC, CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Oct. 18, 1937, No. 28331. [Class 39 (i)] In high-pressure metal-vapour discharge devices of the type comprising an electrode structure wherein a starting and a running electrode are parts of the same mechanically integral body as described in Specification 472,658, the electrode structure comprises a rod 4 of refractory conducting material preferably tungsten or thoria mixed with tungsten powder, an elongated body 2 consisting wholly or partly of thermionically active material more easily vaporizable than the metal of the rod 4, and a porous body 6, preferably a tungsten helix, for uniting the parts 4 and 2. The rod 4, which faces the discharge has its outer end coated with a sintered mixture of thoria and tungsten powder. The part 2 is a rod of thermionically active material supported by a helix 3 of tungsten wire, or alternatively a helix or a number of nested helices coated with the active material.
