Abstract
499,037. Transformers. GRAHAM & CO., Ltd., A., and VAUGHAN, C. H. July 19, 1937, Nos. 19935 and 25015. [Class 38 (ii)] In an arrangement for transmitting power or signalling current through the wall 1 of a structure such as a submarine, gasometer, oil tank, &c. and comprising a transformer the core of which is divided into halves 6, 10 carrying respectively primary and secondary windings 11, 7 and adapted to be located on opposite sides of the wall, the latter is provided with an insulating or non-magnetic high resistance portion 3 having magnetic inserts 5 registering with the core limbs to complete the magnetic circuit when the transformer halves are in position. Either or both halves may be portable and may be held in operative position by permanent magnets 14 abutting against the magnetic structure of the wall or by mechanical latching devices. Where, from pressure considerations, the plate 3 needs to be of thick metal, eddy currents may be reduced by laminating the plate or providing it with slots extending radially from the recesses into which the transformer limbs extend, a thin metal sheet carrying the magnetic inserts being clamped between the plate and rubber packing inserted between the sheet and the wall structure, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The transformer core may be a five-limbed structure carrying two sets of primary and secondary windings for power and signalling currents respectively, Fig. 2 (not shown).
