Abstract

Mineral wool is obtained by blowing a melt containing at least 70 per cent of at least two oxides belonging to the group, silica, titanium oxide, alumina and chromium oxide, and containing at least 20 per cent of silica and titanium oxide on the one hand and at least 20 per cent of alumina and chromium oxide on the other. The melt may also contain up to 30 per cent magnesium oxide but should not contain more than 10 per cent, preferably 5 per cent, iron oxides and calcium oxide. The melt may be blown by jets of superheated steam, hot air or compressed air containing combustible material such as combustible gases, oil or coal dust which is burnt. The mineral wool may be used for heat insulating purposes and for filtering with or without binders.
