Abstract
495,280. Stop-valves. SHORES, W. D. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 5945. [Class 135] In a stop-valve having a pair of displaceable valve elements operable under control of a common means to close inlet and outlet passages to and from the valve body respectively, one valve is connected to the control means by a lost-motion connection which is taken up after the valve is seated to close its passage and during the taking up the valve co-operates with the control means to expand the other, a sleeve type, valve to ensure that the latter effects a fluid tight closure of the other passage. The valve comprises a lift valve 17 closing the inlet 11 to the valve casing 12 and a split sleeve or piston valve 22 which closes the outlet 25 of the casing and is carried between the lift valve 17 and a collar 18 on a screwed operated rod 14 common to both valves. The lift valve 17 is held loosely with some lost motion on the end of the rod 14, and its rear face is bevelled at 21 to engage a corresponding surface on the piston valve 22. This valve is split longitudinally and when the valve 17 has seated itself and the lost motion between it and the rod 14 has been taken up, bevelled surfaces 23 on the piston valve 22 and collar 18 co-operate with the bevelled surfaces 21 to expand the piston valve into tight engagement with the casing. A cross-head 30 on the rod 14 and interengaging lugs 29, 28 on the rod and valve 22 prevent the valve from rotating.
