[Class 83 (iv)] A metal such as iron, zinc or aluminium is prepared for a drawing or other operation. ' involving the use of cutting tools by chemically treating the surface to form a crystalline layer possessing active capillary properties and then impregnating the layer with oil. The metal may be treated with phosphates, oxalates or tannates, the process comprising suspending the metal in a phosphate or other bath maintained at a definite temperature.
