Abstract

494,264. Shot-gun cartridges. HOLLAND, J. E. D., and MANSFIELD, W. April 23, 1937, No. 11738. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to shotgun cartridges of the kind in which the pellets are retained in the case without the use of an overshot wad by turning over or crimping the front end of the case itself, the resistance to opening of the crimped mouth determining, when the cartridge is fired, the pressure available for propelling the pellets through the mouth. According to the invention, a cartridge of this kind consists of two tubes, one constituting a liner in the other and one being of metal turned over at one end to close the cartridge and the other tube stiffening or reinforcing the cartridge for handling purposes. As shown, the cartridge comprises a metal tube 1 constituting a liner in a reinforcing tube 2 from which it projects as shown at 4. The two tubes are secured to the base 3 of the cartridge. The powder 9, Fig. 6, is surmounted by a card wad 8, felt wad 7, card wad 6 and the pellets 5 which are retained in position by turning over or crimping the part 4 so as to render it more or less flush with the tube 2. According to a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the metal tube 1 is located outside the tube 2, extending as before beyond the end of tube 2 and being turned over to retain the pellets. The tube 2 may be of metal, a plastic material or paper.
