Abstract

488,931. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Jan. 15, 1937, No. 1258. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1936. [Class 135] A transmission system in which an internal-combustion engine drives a generator supplying motors and the field of the generator is controlled by a governor through the medium of a fluid pressure servomotor, is provided with means for reducing or cutting off the fuel supply to the engine upon failure of the fluid power supply operating the servomotor. The generator 2 supplies motors 4 and one of its field windings 6 is supplied from one exciter 3, the exciting circuit including a resistance 7 controlled by the governor 11 through a fluid pressure servomotor 20. The governor is driven directly from the engine and adjusts a rod 16 vertically by means of a lever 14. The rod 16 at its upper end carries valves 17 which control the supply of operating fluid to the servomotor 20, and at its lower end controls the engine fuel supply by means of a bell-crank lever 22 and rod 24. In addition, the rod 16 carries a shoulder 28 which may bear against a piston of a second servomotor 26: The piston is urged upwardly by a spring and is forced down by fluid pressure from the pipe 18 which also supplies the first servomotor 20. The arrangement is such that on failure of power supply to the servomotors, the spring under piston 25 moves rod 16 upwardly and thus reduces or cuts off the fuel supply. At the same time, the valve 17 for the upper servomotor is moved into such a position that on restarting, the resistance 7 will be cut out of the generator field circuit to facilitate acceleration. The connection between the governor lever 14 and the rod 16 includes a stop 38 and a light spring 35 which allows operation of the rod 16 by the relay 26 without affecting the governor. To stop the engine, the control rod 24 is turned by a hand lever 31 or by fluid pressure supplied through pipe 30. In a modification, the second relay 26 is controlled by valves which are connected to the middle point of lever 14. The governor may only control the field regulating servomotor, the fuel regulator being then independently controlled by power derived from the same source as the servomotor. The governor may be set to run at different speeds as by rendering operative several loading springs.
