Abstract
473,589. Magnetic switches. GREENLY, H. April 30, 1937, No. 12350. [Class 38 (v)] In an inductor relay the armature is composed of two parts which are pivoted so as to balance each other and which are connected by a coupling which permits the two parts to move in opposite directions. As shown in the Figure, the two armature parts are mounted on separate pivots 8 and connected together at their inner ends by a knuckle joint 9. The free ends 7 of the parts are normally held attracted against the shaped ends of polepieces 6 inductively magnetized by a permanent magnet 5. On the passage of a plate of magnetic material through the gap 4 between the magnet and the polepieces 6, the magnetic flux is diverted through this plate and the ends of the armature parts are drawn from the polepieces 6 by means of a spring 10 connected between lateral arms 11 attached to the armature parts. The movement of these parts brings a contact 13 against a fixed contact. Variation of the retractive force exerted by the spring 10 may be produced by placing its ends in different notches in the outer sides of the arms 8 and limitation of the movements of the armature by adjustable stops 12. In a modified form the operation of the relay is produced by diversion of the permanent magnet flux through a magnetic plate which passes the permanent magnet on its side remote from the armature.
