Abstract
471,227. Applying windings to fishing &c. rods. McARTHUR. J. Sept. 8, 1936, No. 24502. [Class 109] Silk thread, wire, &c. windings are applied to short lengths of a fishing or other rod 27 in a machine provided with a rotating chuck 26 for holding the butt end of the rod, a device 81 traversable along the rod and having a thread guiding eye 72, and rollers 97 .. 99 for supporting the rod adjacent the winding position. The machine is provided also with a friction clutch operated by the engagement of a wedge arm 50 with a pin 49 on an axially movable element of the clutch, and the chuck 26 can be rotated manually, and independently of the remainder of the machine by a wheel 30. The shaft 64 carrying the device 81 has keyed to it a threaded finger 67 engaging a feed screw 38 ; the finger 67 is normally held against the screw 38 by a weighted arm 68, but can be disengaged from the screw 38. The thread is tensioned by discs 73, 74 held together by a spring 75. The supporting rollers 97, 99 can be adjusted lengthways of the rod along a guide rail 92, and one roller 99 is mounted upon a spring-controlled arm 100 so that the opening between the rollers can be adjusted to suit varying diameters of rods.
