Abstract
474,742. Slaughtering pistols. COX, P. April 1, 1936, No. 9576. [Class 5 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] A slaughtering-pistol of the captive-bolt type is provided with a cartridge magazine 15 detachably secured in the butt 2 by a spring- urged pin 18, the cartridges being fed from the magazine into the firing - chamber 14 by the rearward movement of the breech-bolt 21 which is placed below and parallel to the captive-bolt 4. The chamber 14 communicates with the rear of the captive-bolt, by means of a bent conduit 13. Upon ignition, the propellant gases drive forward the bolt until a flange 9 formed thereon comes into contact with a buffer comprising a thick washer 11 of fibre or similar material between which buffer and an annulus formed near the front of the barrel 1 is a block of soft rubber 10. The gases escape through holes 12 in the forward end of the barrel. The cartridges employed in the pistol are tapered at their forward ends, preferably by crimping, in order to facilitate their entry into the firing-chamber.
