Abstract

462,729. Actuation of switches for spot-welding. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25463. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1934. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXII] The current to a spot-welding machine is switched on when the electrodes are applied to the work and exert a certain pressure thereon and is switched off when the pressure reaches a still higher amount. The electrodes 1 move in guides 19 and are carried by a rod 2 screw-threaded at 3 and moving in a nut 4 that moves rotarily with but can slide longitudinally in a worm wheel 6 driven by a worm 7 driven by a motor. When the motor is started, the consequent rotation of the nut 4 must cause either the descent of the rod 2 or the ascent of the nut, which is supported by a ball bearing 8 on a plunger 9 controlled by a spring 11. The spring 11 prevents the ascent of the nut until the downward movement of the rod 2 brings the electrodes 1 into engagement with the work. Thereafter the nut 4 rises and compresses the spring 11, the compression of the spring giving the measure of the pressure of the electrodes on the work. An arm 14 fixed to the plunger 9 is thus moved upwards and two projecting portions of it 15, 16 successively close and open respectively two switches 17, 18 connected in series in the welding circuit. The opening of the switch 17 may also reverse the motor and return the electrodes to their original position.
