Abstract
464,506. Fountain pens. NARAYAN, P. July 17, 1935, No. 20383. [Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen, the nib 7 is carried by a feed-bar loosely fitted in the barrel and slidable under the influence of gravity relatively to a fixed feed-member to and from operative position. The fixed feed-member 3 is screwed into the part 2 of the barrel or is held against rotation therein by a projection on the part 1 of the barrel which screws on to the part 2. The outer end of the part 1 is closed by a spring-pressed cap 14 having a rubber or like stopper 17 to prevent leakage of ink. A finger-piece is provided on the cap to facilitate opening, and a projection thereon engages a notch in the feed-bar 4 to hold the nib in projected position. The nib is attached to the feed-bar by rivets, clips, or springs, and the assembly is freely slidable in the space between the member 3 and the wall of the part 1 of the barrel, projections being provided to prevent rotation and to ensure a clearance between the parts and prevent sticking. Ink is fed to the nib through a passage 19 in the fixed feedmember, the outer end of which may be closed when the nib is in retracted position, to a channel 20 on the movable feed - bar. A space 21 above the feed-member 3 prevents ink from spreading to the cap 14. The part 2 of the barrel may be filled with ink, after removal of the part 1 and associated parts, by means of a filler or by self-filling mechanism which may comprise a sleeve 30 secured in the barrel by the feed-member 3 and carrying a compressible bulb 33. A valve-member 34 formed with flattened sides to permit the flow of ink, shoulders 36 to co-operate with a valve seat in the sleeve, and an air-tube 35 extending into the bulb 33, is mounted in the sleeve and is so arranged that the valve is held open when in position in the pen, but closes on removal for filling. In another modification, the reservoir is closed by a valve controlled by a cap rotatable on the rear end of the barrel. A pocket clip 27 may be provided extending over a recessed part of the barrel.
