Abstract
451,774. Condensing metal vapours. ST. JOSEPH LEAD CO., 250, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Feb. 11, 1935, No. 4364. Convention date, March 8, 1934. [Class 82 (i)] The vapours of volatile metals such as zinc, mercury, cadmium, magnesium, or tin are condensed by being drawn under vacuum through a bath of the liquid or molten metal which is agitated by the passage therethrough of the vapours, which are retarded by a series of baffles on the upper wall of an inclined condensing chamber. In the case, for example, of zinc, a bath of the molten metal in a chamber 1 is supplied with zinc vapour from a duct 2, and is subjected to a vacuum of 6 to 20 inches of mercury by a pump 4, so that the passage of the vapour agitates the molten metal, baffles 5 and 6 being provided to increase the agitation. The uncondensed gases such as CO are drawn off through chamber 3, washed in sprays 9, and collected in a gas holder 11. The temperature of the molten metal is maintained constant by pipes 12 in connection with a cooler 13, circulating pump 16 and furnace 14.
