Abstract
451,616. Dividing by fusion; toothed gearing. HANCOCK, L. J., 85, Brighton Road, Sutton, Surrey. March 19, 1935, Nos. 8601/35 and 8141/36. [Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group XXIV] In a flame cutting-machine the worm wheel in the final drive of the tracer wheel or roller is prevented from overrunning the driving worm by means of a second worm normally driven in syn - chronism therewith and engaging the leading sides of the worm wheel teeth when the thrust receiving sides are in contact with the driving worm, wear being taken up by advancing the driving worm relatively to the second worm. The shaft 1 on the tracer head, which is driven by an electric or clockwork motor, carries a pinion 4, which meshes directly with a pinion 5 and through an idler 6 with a pinion 7. The pinions 5, 7 are carried by shafts 12, 10 mounted in a body 9 screwed into the handle 3 and having worms 14, 13 at their other ends engaging the opposite side sof a worm wheel 15 on a shaft carrying the tracer wheel 16. In order to adjust for back lash the body may be unscrewed from the handle and the pinion 4 withdrawn, whereupon the worm 14 may be independently rotated either through a milled knob on the end of the shaft of the idler pinion 6, or by turning pinion 6 or 7 direct. In a modification the second worm may engage with a second worm wheel on the other side of the tracer, the worm being mounted on either side of the worm wheel according as it is of the same or opposite hand to the driving worm, the idler being dispensed with. According to the first Provisional Specification, the adjustment may be effected by fixing one of the pinions to its worm shaft by a nut, which is released to allow one worm to be rotated relatively to the other to take up back lash.
