[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 6, 1935.] [Class 145 (i)] In a tenoning-machine the carriage which carries the wood is pivoted and capable of being fixed in such a way that cuts running obliquely to the long axis of the work can be made thereby enabling the machine to cut tenons for concealed corner joints or mitre joints. The cutter 3, Fig. 3, is mounted on a spindle 2 carried by a rocker 6 pivoted about a horizontal axis in the machine frame ; an electric motor 7 mounted on the other end of the rocker 6 acts as counterweight and drives the cutter through a belt ; alternatively the cutter may be mounted on the motor spindle. The arm 6 is rocked by a handle and stops are provided to limit the rocking movement or for fixing the arm in desired position. Alternatively the cutter may be mounted on a carriage or by linkage to ensure absolutely vertical movement. The work is secured on a carriage 10 having a horizontal displacement limited by stops. To cut a tenon 20, Fig. 4, the work is moved from right to left ; the cutter is then moved down ; the work is moved back from left to right and the cutter is movedup, whereby all the faces of the tenon are cut by the single cutter by means of relative movement between it and the work. By inclining the work carriage 10 about its pivot 11 a mitre tenon can be cut as shown in Fig. 8. Corresponding mortises 17, Fig. 11, are cut by a chain mortiser 14 passing around chain wheel 18 and rollers 19 mounted on a guide plate 22 and driven by a motor 13, the motor and mortiser being mounted on a carriage movable on the bed 12, said movement being limited by stops.
