Abstract
Refractory articles especially suitable for use in contact with molten glass, e.g. linings of glass tank furnaces, stirrers, throat blocks, &c., are cast from a melt of materials consisting of aluminous ore containing silica, and one or more oxides or carbonates of calcium, magnesium, barium, sodium or potassium without the addition of silica as an added ingredient. The finished article contains not more than 15 per cent of silica and preferably from 2-5 per cent. Preferably the proportion of the added oxides or carbonates is 1-10 per cent, and the alumina content is not less than 80 per cent. In examples, the raw materials for a melt comprise (1) 94 parts of bauxite and 6 parts of soda ash, and (2) 97 parts of aluminous ore containing 3 per cent of silica, and 3 parts of barium carbonate.
