[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 23, 1935.] [Class 117] Apparatus for de-dusting coal &c. comprises a box 2 with a vibrating sieve bottom 7 to which the coal is fed from a shoot X, a conduit directing a blast of air against the underside of the sieve, the cross-section of the conduit being for some distance below the sieve substantially equal in area thereto, a suction conduit or conduits, elongated upwards with a very gradual taper extending into the upper part of the box and disposed so that suction operates over the entire surface of the sieve, the suction and blast being separately controlled and the box having an air inlet or inlets 5 close to the top level of the material so that the suction conduit receives air from the outside of the box in addition to the air passing through the sieve. The blast conduit is preferably slightly tapered and the sieve is vibrated by an unbalanced shaft 4. The suction conduit may be in the form of a number of nozzles vertically adjustable and provided with regulable lateral inlets. An expansion chamber 10 may be provided in the suction conduit and be provided with a pipe 12 for collecting the deposited material. A vane wheel 11 discharges the deposit and regulable air inlets 13 are provided for admission of air to prevent dust from settling in the pipe. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with apparatus for separating materials of different specific gravities by pneumatic stratification or may itself be adapted to function as such by providing at the lower end of the sieve 7 a weir for the coal and a gate for the refuse. A sieve 71 may be mounted in the blast conduit for equalizing the air flow over the cross-section.
