Abstract
448,498. Compound fabrics. JACKSON, R. G., Bayard Avenue, Woodbury, New Jersey, U.S.A. Nov. 7, 1934, No. 32053. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1933. [Class 140] A floor, wall, &c. covering comprises a laminated sheet having a supporting base upon which is mounted a wear layer of non- woven felted or paper-like porous sheet material decorated in colour and having a nap surface, the decorations being in designs and extending from the surface, including the nap, deep down into the body of the sheet. The wear layer is composed of vegetable or animal fibres including cotton linters, wood fibres, wool, grass, &c., and preferably consists of a decorative sheet of curled or kinked cellulosic fibres as described in Specification 391,981. The dried sheet may be impregnated with a saturant ; e.g. a cellulose ester to fill, partly or completely, the voids between the fibres. The nap may be provided by using a thin paint for decoration or may be raised mechanically after formation of the sheet. As shown in Fig. 2, the decorative sheet 1, having a nap 2, is mounted on a flexible base 3 which may be of paper, felt or burlap or canvas. The decorations may extend wholly or partly through the layer 1. Fig. 4 shows a reversible sheet in which a supporting layer 5 of plastic adhesive material, felt or woven fabric is provided on opposite faces with decorative, napped layers 7, 8 bearing different designs. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the decorative layer is also furnished with an embossed design the raised portion 12, at least, being provided with a iiap. Fig. 11 shows a further modification comprising two decorative layers secured together by adhesive, only the layer 15 being provided with a nap and the layer 16 being completely saturated.
