Abstract

444,526. Treating gases with electric discharges. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. June 27, 1935, No. 18450. Convention date, June 28, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XI] In the treatment of gases by electrical discharges for producing chemical reactions such as the production of nitric oxide from air or acetylene from methane, the gas is brought into acoustic oscillation in the treating space. The oscillation may be generated by means of whistles or sirens, or alternatively by an alternating current in the treating space, the frequency of which is tuned to the fundamental acoustic resonant note of the space. One method of carrying out the invention is shown in the Figure, in which a whistle made of insulating material with metal lip L and ledge F is used. The lip L and ledge F are discharge electrodes in a circuit A.
