[Class 58] Rice or other hard kernelled grain, seed, or bean, is hulled by being passed between a hard roller A, of chilled or hardened metal cut to form wide pitched ratchet teeth parallel or slightly inclined to the axis of the roller, and a soft roller B so that the kernels are pushed out of the shells through one end thereof. The pitch of the teeth is such that only two teeth can engage with a grain as it passes between the rollers and the teeth are preferably made with a sharp leading edge and with a pronounced landing X on their crests to prevent a shearing action. Either the hard or the soft roller may be arranged to rotate the faster, the teeth being pointed in accordance therewith. The grain is fed from a hopper 8 down a grooved feed plate 1 mounted on a cradle suspended by small rollers 3 from guide rails 4 on the main frame and slowly reciprocated by eccentrics 5. A clearing roller 9 ensures grains passing in a single layer and in alignment down the grooved plate to the husking rollers. The husks are carried off by an aspirating current at the lower end of the machine. Specification 393,351 is referred to. The hulling surfaces may be formed by endless bands passing over one or both rollers, such band or bands being arranged so as to subject the grain to a single nip as it passes between the rollers.
