435,091. Winding-gear on motor vehicles. MORRIS COMMERCIAL CARS, Ltd., BODEN, O., and ROSE, P. G., Adderley Park, Birmingham. April 2, 1935, No. 10162. [Class 78 (v)] [See also Group XXXI] A motor vehicle is provided with winding- gear housed in a casing 7 carried by or formed as an extension of the change-speed gear-box, and a winding drum 6 operated by the winding- gear is mounted on a cross shaft 18 which is supported by the side members 20 of the vehicle frame and passes through or is attached to the casing 7. Two clutches, operated by a single hand lever, are provided for ensuring that when the winding gear is being driven the road wheels are disconnected from the engine, and vice versa. The main shaft 3 of the gearbox 1 drives the winding drum through spiral gears 10, 11, a clutch 13 on a shaft 2, and a pinion 4 on shaft 2 gearing with a toothed annulus 5 on the drum 6. The shaft 3 can also drive the road wheels through a clutch 26 and a stub shaft 28 which drives the transmission shaft (not shown). The clutches 13, 26 are alternatively operated by a hand lever 15 working in an L-shaped slot 33. When the hand lever is rocked in the plane of the paper, Fig. 1, it rocks a lever 16 and shaft 31 and slides the clutch 13 into or out of engagement with the spiral gear 11 leaving clutch 26 unaffected in the disengaged position ; when the lever is rocked in the plane of Fig. 2 it slides shaft 31 and moves clutch 26 into or out of engagement, leaving clutch 13 in the disengaged position. When the lever is at the angle of the L-slot 33 both clutches are disengaged. The speed of winding is controlled by means of a brake 23 on the shaft 2.
