Abstract
Steel rails are rolled to their finished sections, cooled from the rolling temperature to a point only slightly below the lower critical temperature, reheated to slightly above the upper critical temperature and then cooled in air or in a hot-bed to atmosphere temperature. In practice the rails are cooled from a rolling temperature of 925-1065 DEG C., to 500-700 DEG C., and reheated to 800-850 DEG C. The rail may be made from an alloy steel containing 0,2-0,9 per cent of carbon, 0,3-1,60 pf manganese, up to ,08 of phosphorus, up to 0,8 of sulphur, up to 2,0 of silicon and up to 3,0 of chromium, and also, if desired, up to 0,2 of nickel, 0,25 of copper and 0,15 of vanadium. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 271,529, [Class 72].
