Abstract

422,190. Separating solid materials. HORSFIELD, W. R., 14, Regent Street, London. May 5, 1933, No. 13123. [Class 117] In apparatus for sorting vegetable articles such as peas or other materials of the type in which the articles are successively exposed to the action of ultra-violet light, and the radiation from the surface of the articles is directed on to a photo-electric or other light sensitive device which controls the selection of the articles, the source of light is a mercuryvapour lamp or other source having an ultraviolet content, means, such as a filter, are provided for eliminating the whole or a substantial portion of the visual light before it reaches the article, and the rays reflected or radiated from the article are transmitted to the light sensitive device without absorption or alteration. Fig. 3 shows the optical part of the apparatus which comprises a mercury-vapour lamp 18, the arc 26 of which lies on the axis of a spherical or parabolic mirror 22 which reflects the light through a filter 27 on to the surface of an article 31 such as a pea. The light reflected or radiated from the article is reflected and focused by a mirror 33 and lens 34 on to a photo-electric cell which is in circuit with means for controlling an air-jet 37 or other means for ejecting selected articles. As shown in Fig. 2, the articles are fed in succession to the selecting apparatus 9 on a broad conveyer band 4 which coacts with stationary guides 6, 8 to present the articles in line after delivery from a hopper 1 by means of a feed wheel 2 and shoot 3. The air-jet or other ejecting means moves the articles to varying degrees laterally across the band 4 and shoots 11, 14 preferably with adjustable division plates, are provided at the delivery end of the band for collecting the separated products.
