Abstract
Nuclear substituted aromatic amines are obtained by heating aromatic amines of the benzene and diphenylamine series which are substituted on the nitrogen atom by alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl radicles with the addition of a surface catalyst of the kind used in the parent Specification. Suitable catalysts are hydrosilicates particularly of aluminium, such as those known as Tonsil, Frankonit, and Floridin. They may be activated by treatment with acids or by precipitation upon them of acid reacting substances such as alum, polychromates, tungstates, phosphomolybdic acid, phosphotungstic acid, fluosilicic acid. Temperatures of 200--270 DEG C. are specified. The examples describe the conversions of (1) N-monoethyl-o-toluidine into 1 - methyl - 5 - ethyl - 2 - amino - benzene; (2) dimethylaniline into metaxylidine; (3) N - benzyl - p - toluidine into p - methyl - o-benzylaniline; (4) N-methyl-diphenylamine into a mixture of ortho- and para-methyldiphenylamine; (5) N-cyclohexylaniline into a mixture of ortho- and para-cyclohexylaniline.
