[Class 94 (i)] In a machine for wrapping articles such as batches of cigarettes, the cigarettes are removed from a hopper 1, Fig. 1, by pushers 2 on an endless conveyer chain, a coupon may be superposed at 3, and the batch arrives in the path of a plunger having two pusher faces 4, 4<1>, Fig. 2. The plunger moves through a rectangular path, sinking beneath the table to make the return stroke. The pusher 4 engages the batch laterally and forces it past light retaining springs 5, 6 into contact with a length of foil &c. fed from a reel 8 and severed by a knife 9. The travel of the batch causes the foil to be applied to one side and the top and bottom surfaces as shown in Fig. 5. Folders 10, 11 turn the edges up and down respectively, and the partially wrapped batch is advanced by the pusher 4<1> into contact with a label or outer wrapper fed from a pill 14 through scoring rollers 15, 16, guides 17, 18 and into a support 19. During the further travel to the left, the outer wrapper, the edges of which may be co-terminous with the ends of the latch, is applied to one side and the top and bottom surfaces of the partially wrapped packet. The upper projecting edge is turned down by a folder 28 moving simultaneously with a dabber 31 which applies adhesive to the lower edge. The lower edge is now folded upwards by the pusher piece 35 of a continuous conveyer of the kind in which the pieces move round a rectangular path. The pushers 35 carry the package past end folding apparatus comprising fixed folders 37, Fig. 1, and swinging folders 38 for forming the end tucks in the projecting ends of the inner wrapper, and spiral folders 39, 41, between which gumming wheels 40 are placed, for completing the end closing. The completed packets are passed up a stacker 42. The foil or wrapping material may be fed into the wrapping position together with the label or second wrapper and the folding operations may take place on both wrappers simultaneously. The broad end flaps of the packets may be left unsecured.
