Abstract

Pencil-lead sheaths are made from a paste obtained by incorporating wood fibre with a solution of a cellulose derivative, and if necessary evaporating a portion of the solvent, the paste being moulded to shape by extrusion &c. The wood fibres used have a length at least four times the diameter and not less than 0,25 mm. Cellulose acetate, for example, dissolved in acetone, together with a plasticizer, and optionally a natural or synthetic resin as a cohesive, is mixed with wood fibre in a vacuum mixer, and the solvent is evaporated off till a stiff dough is obtained. After moulding the remaining solvent is evaporated. Hardening agents, accelerators, retarders, and colouring matter may be included in the composition. According to the Provisional Specification other plastics such as casein and natural or synthetic resins may be used as the binder, and fillers such as china clay may be added, and the sheaths may be applied to coloured pencils and crayons.
