Abstract

413,486. Tobacco-stemming machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields London.-(Standard Tobacco Stemmer Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) June 15, 1933, No. 17079. [Class 130.] Tobacco leaves or leaf portions are delivered to one end of an annular space between relatively rotatable members carrying shredding-elements, and the leaf and stem fragments are discharged by a fan through a common outlet into a device for separating the leaf fragments from the stem fragments. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the leaves L are delivered through a shoot 19 to the annular space between a fixed shell 15 which carries pins 16, and a rotating shell 23 which carries pins 24. The pins 16 are square and the pins 24 are rectangular and are set with their longer sides inclined to the direction of movement to impart to the stem and leaf fragments movement towards the delivery part of the annular space. A fan 30 is provided in an extension 26 of the shell 15, which is closed from the annular space between the shells 15, 23 except at the delivery part. The fan is closed in by a disc 29 which is provided with a regulable air inlet, and forces the stem and leaf fragments through a pipe 37 in which is mounted an adjustable baffle 42. The heavy stem fragments S drop from the first section of a chamber 38, while the leaf fragments L<1> are blown over a partition 39, and dust D passes through a screen 41 carried by a partition 40. In a modified construction, a common feeding- device introduces the tobacco leaves into the annular spaces between the relatively rotatable members of two shredding-units, and the extensions 26 are provided at their lower parts with screened outlets to permit dust and small particles to escape. Two baffles are mounted in the discharge pipe to gather long and short stems, whilst the leaf fragments are blown over both baffles. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the leaves are fed by a belt A to beaters 81 which clear the butt ends of the stems, and drop them down the shoot 19. The leaves L are then fed by belts C to the stripping- machine, the stripped tobacco falling into a receptacle E, whilst the stems are delivered to a receptacle F. The leaf fragments, after being shredded, are delivered by the fan into the receptacle E, whilst the stem fragments fall through an outlet 82 on to a belt 83, which carries them into the receptacle F.
