Abstract
In the production of alkali metal nitrates from calcium nitrate and alkali metal chlorides by the aid of zeolites, fresh or regenerated zeolite is washed with several washing liquids of increasing nitrate content obtained by washing out adsorbed salts from the exhausted zeolite, and exhausted zeolite is washed with several solutions of decreasing nitrate content resulting from the pretreatment of the fresh or regenerated zeolite. By these means, the need for evaporation of the washing liquids, which circulate continuously in the process, to recover their nitrate content is obviated, and the initial saturation of the zeolite with nitrate enables relatively concentrated solutions of nitrate to be obtained. In an example illustrating the production of sodium nitrate, twelve towers containing zeolite are employed, six being in use at any one time, and the remainder being out of commission for the washing and regenerating operations. From a 40 per cent solution of calcium nitrate a 36 per cent solution of sodium nitrate is obtained. Specifications 407,311 and 407,313 are referred to.
