Abstract

407,112. Operating motor - vehicle clutches. POLLAK, J. E., 20, Holborn, London.-(Borg & Beck Co. ; 6558, South Menard Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Oct. 1, 1932, No. 27341. [Class 80 (ii).] In engine - suction servomotor gear for operating motor-vehicle clutches controlled by regulator valve mechanism including a driveroperated main valve for connecting the actuator cylinder to suction and atmosphere, a check valve to retard approach of the clutch members just prior to engagement, and a " bleed " valve controlling the final phase of approach, the three valves operate in a single cylinder or casing communicating by a passage with the actuator cylinder. The servomotor comprises a chamber 23 with a flexible diaphragm 26 connected by a rod 31 and cable 38 to the clutch pedal 21, the main valve 50 being connected by a Bowden wire 55 to a button 58 on the gear-lever 16. When, in gear-changing, the button 58 is depressed against a spring (not shown), the double piston valve 50 is raised from a stop 60 to put the chamber 23 into communication with the inlet manifold 12 by way of pipes 61, 65 and the space around the valve stem 51, so that the rod 31 is lifted and the pedal 21 rapidly depressed. On release of the valve 50, the pipe 65 is connected to atmosphere by way of a check valve 70 normally held open by a spring 78 acting on a rod 74. The rod 74 is connected through an adjustable spring 81 to an arm 44 moving with the rod 31, so that, when the compression of spring 81 overcomes the tension of spring 78, the valve 70 closes, air then flowing in to complete the clutch engagement through a " bleed" aperture adjusted by a screw 85. The valve casing 47 is bolted at 49 to the diaphragm casing 23, which is supported by a bracket on the dash 20.
