Abstract

405,477. Optical sound - recording. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA, 570, Lexington Avenue, New York, U.S.A. March 25, 1933, No. 9099. Convention date, May 9, 1932. [Class 40 (ii).] In photographic sound-recording, distortion arising from decrease in the resolution of the sound record as the frequency of the recorded sound increases is obviated by shifting the median line of the record in accordance with the decrease in resolution. For this purpose, the high prequency components of the electrical impulses produced by the sound are isolated, and employed to modify the mean position of the recording beam. The apparatus shown for carrying out the invention comprises a galvanometer type of recorder 14 which is of usual construction except that associated with the mirror 22 are two actuating coils 16, 17. One of these, 16, is connected directly to the output of the amplifier 13 in circuit with the microphone 10, and the coil 17 is connected to the output of a rectifier 34, 35 which is fed by an auxiliary high-frequency responsive circuit 15, the input of which is connected to the amplifier 13. Since the coil 17 responds only to the higher frequency components of the sound being recorded, it shifts the mean position of the light beam in accordance with the changes in the resolving power of the film at different frequencies. Thus the mean transmission of the film is made constant for all useful frequencies.
