Abstract

390,972. Starting prime movers. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS, Ltd., Percy Buildings, Gresse Street, Rathbone Place, and LOCK, A. C., 30, Dulwich Common, both in London. June 13, 1932, No. 16723. [Class 38 (iv).] In an electric starter in which a toothed driving member 6 is moved axially into and out of engagement with a toothed engine member 8 by a helical connection 7 between the driving member 6 and the spindle of the starting motor, the initial movement of a switch completes the motor circuit through a resistance and after the driving member engages the member 8 the switch is released by the driving member and short-circuits the resistance. As shown, the member 6 is a pinion having a pin engaging a helical slot 7 in a sleeve 3 driven through a spring 'from the spindle 2. The switch comprises a solenoid 27, the core 25 having an extension 24 carrying a carbon contact disc 31 and a dished metal contact member 40, normally held in the position shown by springs 38, 39. On closing the circuit of the solenoid, the movement of the core 25 brings the disc 31 into contact with arcuate carbon contacts 43, 44 of high resistance in the circuit of the starting-motor. In this position, a brake block 11 on a lever 12 is held in engagement with a collar 10 on the pinion 6, a hook 29 on the end of the lever 12 engaging a hooked pawl 21 pivoted at 22 to a head 23 on the extension 24 of the core 25. The position of the pawl is determined by a spring 28 and an adjusting screw 29. When the axial movement of the pinion into engagement with the engine gear 8 is completed, the collar 10 clears the brake block 11 and allows the solenoid to bring the member 40 into engagement with copper contacts 46, 47, cutting out the resistance 43, 44 from the motor circuit and allowing the motor to speed up. In this position the pawl 20 rides over the end of the lever 12, which is returned by a spring 17.
