Abstract
Alkali or ammonium sulphates and sulphur are obtained by heating the corresponding bisulphites with alkali thiosulphates in aqueous solution at a temperature of 100-200 DEG C. in a closed vessel under the pressure set up spontaneously in the reaction vessel, or under higher pressure. The alkali thiosulphate may be wholly or partially replaced by a mixture of normal alkali sulphite and sulphur and/or sulphuretted hydrogen, or substances capable of furnishing it under the operating conditions, e.g. carbon oxysulphide. When employing sulphuretted hydrogen, temperatures as low as 80 DEG C. may be employed. When reacting the bisulphites with a mixture of normal sulphite and sulphur the initial addition of sulphur may be less than, but not less than one-tenth of, the amount theoretically required. Examples are given.
