Abstract
A surgical dressing consists of superposed webs of water-penetrable material such as gauze, one web being impregnated with an iodine-containing material capable of releasing free iodine, and another web being impregnated with a material capable of reacting in the presence of moisture with such iodine-containing material with the release of iodine. The iodine-containing material may be an iodide, such as of one or more of the elements potassium, sodium, calcium or barium, in which case the other material is an oxidizing agent, for example, calcium or potassium iodate or periodate, potassium permanganate or ferric chloride. An acid such as citric or tartaric acid, or an acid-reacting substance such as aluminium sulphate must also be present with the oxidizing agent. The acid and oxidizing agent may be afforded in a single compound, for example, iodic or periodic acid, or ferric chloride. Alternatively, an iodate or periodate such as of one or more of the elements barium, calcium or potassium may be employed as the iodine-containing substance, in which case the iodine-releasing substance is a reducing agent, for example, sodium, potassium or calcium iodide, or sodium or potassium thiosulphate. An acid such as has been specified must also be present. Separate areas of the gauze are impregnated with solutions of the several materials, dried and folded. The impregnated layers may be in immediate contact, or they may be separated by an unimpregnated layer of gauze or other water-penetrable material.
