Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of polymerized monovinyl compounds, for use as coating or impregnating compositions, are obtained by polymerizing aqueous emulsions of the monomeric compounds, which may be acrylic acid esters, styrene, or vinyl chloride or acetate or mixtures thereof, for example by the process of Specification 358,534. In examples dispersions are obtained (1) by polymerizing an aqueous emulsion of the methyl ester of monomeric acrylic acid by means of hydrogen peroxide at 70-95 DEG C. while adding a small quantity of Turkey red oil and sodium di-isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and (2) by polymerizing together styrene and acrylic acid methyl ester. Specifications 294,474, 297,050, 335,185, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 355,573, 360,822, 369,915, and 374,436, also are referred to.ALSO:Aqueous dispersions of polymerized monovinyl compounds obtained as described in Specification 358,534 by polymerizing aqueous emulsions of the unpolymerized compounds, are used for coating or impregnating absorbent material such as leather, paper, wood, textiles, artificial stone, &c. Acrylic acid esters, styrene, vinyl chloride or acetate may be used, and other varnish or lacquer constituents such as cellulose derivatives, resins or softeners may be dissolved in the unpolymerized compounds before emulsifying. Alternatively the varnish &c. constituents, or colouring matters, solvents such as toluene &c. may be dispersed in water and mixed with the finished dispersions. Water-soluble thickening agents such as starch, water glass, polymerized vinyl alcohol, or the sodium salt of polymerized acrylic acid may be added. The coated surface may be rendered smooth by the application of pressure and heat, or may be sprayed with solvents or their emulsions, to which may be added cellulose derivatives, oil varnishes, aluminium stearate, resins, e.g. shellac, albumen, casein, &c. In examples, dispersions are obtained (1) by polymerizing an aqueous emulsion of the methyl ester of monomeric acrylic acid by means of hydrogen peroxide at 70-95 DEG C. while adding a small quantity of Turkey red oil and sodium di-isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and (2) by polymerizing together styrene and acrylic acid methyl ester. Specifications 294,474, 297,050, 335,185, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 355,573, [Group IV], 360,822, 369,915; and 374,436, [Group IV], also are referred to.
