Abstract

Cellulose is acetylated in the presence of a non-solvent and sulphur dioxide, using perchloric acid as catalyst. The temperature is kept below about 40 DEG C. Instead of perchloric acid itself there may be used its salts with weak bases, e.g. magnesium perchlorate, or zinc perchlorate, or its salts together with free acids. In examples, cotton linters pretreated with glacial acetic acid are acetylated in a bath comprising (1) acetic anhydride, toluene, sulphur dioxide, and perchloric acid, (2) acetic anhydride, toluene, sulphur dioxide, and zinc perchlorate, and (3) acetic anhydride, benzene, sulphur dioxide, sodium perchlorate and phosphoric acid. As catalyst there may also be used a mixture of lithium perchlorate and phosphoric acid. The fibrous cellulose triacetates, if desired, after converting to an acetone soluble form, e.g. by the process of Specification 355,419, may be employed in the production of artificial silk, films, foils, insulating materials, plastic masses, lacquers, or the like. Specifications 312,242, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 363,700 also are referred to.
