Abstract
387,082. Glass manufacture. GREGG & CO. (KNOTTINGLEY), Ltd., Hope Glass Works, Goole Road, and GREGG, H., Brooklyn House, Cow Lane, both in Knottingley, Yorkshire. Dec. 11, 1931, No. 34331. [Class 56.] Relates to a feeder of the kind in which the reciprocating plunger is surrounded by a tubular member or " sleeve " for controlling the flow of glass to the outlet. According to the invention, means are provided for preventing the iron parts that support the sleeve from being damaged by exposure to gas flames and hot gases, and thus to prevent iron scales from falling into the glass. The sleeve 1, Fig. 1, is made of refractory material and is carried by a metal plate 3 which is secured to the lower ends of two racks 22. An iron ring 7 fits into groove 6 in the sleeve and is secured to the plate 3 by bolts. These bolts engage slots in the edge of the plate 3 and thus permit easy removal of the ring 7 and the sleeve. Below the groove 6, the sleeve is enlarged to form a flange 4, the underside of which is bevelled, as shown. The bevelled portion 5 acts as a deflector which causes the hot gases arising from the forehearth 12 to travel outwards away from the sleeve holder and the parts connected with it. The ends 41 of the plate 3 are slotted to facilitate detachment from the racks 22. The ring 7 may be dispensed with, the sleeve being gripped by a flange on a ring which is formed on the underside of the plate 3. When the sleeve is to be rotated, the holder 3, Fig. 7, is provided with flanges 43 which slide into parallel guides 44 formed on a tubular member 45 that rests on a ball bearing on a plate 48 secured to the racks 22. The holder is locked in position by means of pivoted latches.
