Abstract
Fabrics are waterproofed with an emulsion of a fatty acid or resin soap of a polyvalent metal, such as aluminium, magnesium, zinc or lead, which has been stabilized by forcing it under high pressure through small holes or slots. A waterproofing substance such as paraffin wax, montan wax, bitumen or beeswax may be incorporated therewith. As emulsifying agents albumen, glue, gelatine, casein, gum arabic, carrageen moss, starch, and dextrin may be employed together with wetting agents such as aliphatic or hydro-aromatic alcohols, ketones, amines, esters, &c. When a waterproofing substance is added, the emulsion is preferably heated and, on setting, is emulsified again with water. In an example, an oil soap is stirred with bone glue swollen with water and the resultant liquid diluted with water. Aluminium formate in solution is then added and the solution homogenized, a small amount of butyl alcohol, acetic ester or acetone being finally added.
