Abstract

Artificial filaments of high dry and wet tenacity and elongation are obtained by extruding viscose into a heated coagulation bath containing dilute sulphuric acid, removing the thread from the bath after a very short time, allowing a short time for partial setting, and subjecting the thread to a gradually increasing tension while the coagulation is being completed by the liquid adhering to the thread, or by another coagulating medium. The strength of the sulphuric acid should be between 8 and 20 per cent and there may be added salts such as sodium, zinc, and magnesium sulphate, and other substances such as glucose, dextrine, and gums. The temperature of the bath should be between 55 DEG C. and 80 DEG C. The period of partial setting is 5-30 times the period of immersion, and the stretching period is 20-70 times the period of immersion. It is preferable to pass the thread over a final stretching drum which has a speed somewhat greater than that of the winding device. Improved results are obtained when unripened viscose prepared from unripened alkali cellulose is employed. When coagulation is completed by a second liquid, one or more of the stretching discs may be immersed therein, or the liquid may be sprayed upon the thread.
