Abstract
Liquids such as kerosene, fuel oils, lubricating oils, and petrol alone or mixed with alcohol or benzene, are marked for purposes of identification by the addition of not more than 1, or in some cases 10, parts per million of one or more substances which are not detectable at this concentration by sight, smell, or other human sense but are by physical or chemical test. A plurality of quantities of fuel in bulk may be so treated with different markers. Specified markers are quinine, vesculin, phenol-phthalein, cresol-phthalein, thymol-phthalein, brom-thymol blue, hydroxy-fluorane and its derivatives and salts thereof, fluorescein, metaphenylene-diamine, anthracene, p-chloro-nitrobenzene, and furfurol and its homologues and derivatives. They may be added direct or in solution, e.g. in alcohol. Tests specified are: (1) treatment of the liquids or aqueous or alkaline extracts thereof with indicators of known hydrogen ion concentration; (2) spectroscopic; (3) the fluorescence produced on exposure to ultra-violet light of the liquid or extracts therefrom.
