Abstract

365,069. Hydraulic transmission brakes. RUBURY, J. M., Park Hall, Bradwell, Braintree, Essex. Oct. 6, 1930, No. 29937. [Class 103 (i).] Hydraulic m echanism comprises a mechanically operated piston in a cylinder in communication with a liquid tank a second piston in a cylinder, and communicating with the first piston, a definite pressure non-return device in a duct between the spaces on each side of the second piston and a hydraulic device operating the brakes. The piston d is adapted to be moved by the pedal f to cover an inlet c communicating with the liquid tank b and moves the piston h by means of a spring e to force fluid to the brakes through pipes k. At the moment when the brake shoes engage the drum the piston h is arranged to engage a stop l and any further movement of the pedal f moves the piston d alone forcing liquid past the spring-pressed valve j which recloses when liquid ceases to. flow. Wear of the' brake shoes is thus compensated. In Fig. 3 the pistons d, h are contained in separate cylinders a, a<1>and the spring e for returning the piston d rests against the bottom of the cylinder a and the return of the piston h is limited by an adjustable stop p. A fluid exhaust relief valve o is provided in a passage n communicating between the reverse side of each piston. The cylinder a<1> and piston h can be arranged as a separate unit and is also shown as part of a cylinder containing two pistons operating brake shoes in a drum. Equalizing mechanism for operating brake shoes comprises bell-crank levers w mounted on the brake anchor plate and having one arm pivotally connected to the brake shoes and the other engaging a spring plunger x. The usual retracting spring v is provided. An operating mechanism for a brake shoe comprises a piston r fixedly mounted at the end of the pipe line k and on which slides the cylinder s which has inclined planes s<1> coacting with rollers y on the brake shoes. The cylinder is guided by guides z mounted on the anchor plate.
