Abstract
356,664. Resins and cellular compositions ; endless-chain moulding- machines; moulds. McCULLOUGH, W. E., Kenosha, Wisconsin, and TRICKEY, J. P., Evanston, Illinois, both in U.S.A. March 4, 1930, No. 7071. Convention date, May 4, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 22, 70, and 87 (ii).] Articles of cellular internal structure are moulded from thermo-setting compositions, e.g. phenol-aldehyde resin, the cells being formed by liberation of gases within the article during the moulding process. The moulds are partly filled with the moulding powder or composition, closed gastight, and heated, whereby gases are formed and pressure developed inside the moulds and the material is set and hardened. An example of a suitable resin comprises 235 parts of phenol, 96 parts of furfural and 12¢ parts of lime. The ingredients are reacted. n an autoclave at a temperature of 110-140‹ C. 265 parts of the resin so formed are compounded with 50 parts of hexamethylenetetramine, 8 parts of stearic acid, and 285 parts of wood flour to form a moulding powder. Cotton or other long fibre may also be incorporated, the composition being dried and passed through a fluffing machine. Gas producing substances other than the hexamethylenetetramine may be used, e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, &c. A suitable mould comprises a steel ring 10, Fig. 1, closed at the top and bottom by steel discs 15, 11 resting on lead gaskets 16, 13 on shoulders 14, 12. The top disc 15 is pressed into the closing position by a hand screw 20 carried by a removable yoke 17. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, a number of moulds 10 are attached to an endless chain or belt 46 and are successively passed through a heating oven 60 after having been charged from a hopper 50. Arms and backs of chairs, table tops, &c. may be formed of the cellular composition.
