Abstract

Vapours of aromatic dicarboxylic acids, or their anhydrides, are passed, together with the vapours of aliphatic carboxylic acids, over suitable catalysts, e.g. the oxides or carbonates of the alkaline earth, earth, and heavy metals, in particular thoria, manganous oxide, ferrous oxide, alumina and calcium carbonate. One carboxylic group of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid is replaced by hydrogen, and the other reacts with the aliphatic acid with ketone formation. In the example, 1 molecular proportion of phthalic anhydride is mixed with 3 molecular proportions of acetic acid, and the vapours are passed over manganous oxide in a tube heated to 350-400 DEG C. Carbon dioxide is evolved and in the receiver is collected a mixture of acetone and acetophenone. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that by employing a dicarboxylic acid as aliphatic component, a fatty-aromatic keto-acid is obtained. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
