Endless-chain conveyers with fixed buckets; guides and roller tracks; transferring from one conveyer to another; discharging devices; driving- gear.-In plant for sterilizing milk &c. in sealed bottles, the bottles are carried in cages 19, Fig. 8, mounted in transverse frames 19<a> across the width of an endless chain conveyer. The necks of the bottles bear against fixed or resilient caps in the cages, as claimed in Specification 332,912, [Class 49, Food &c.]. The bottles are held in the cages by bars 52 secured between pairs of rods 53. The ends of these rods travel in guides which are formed with ramps to slide the rods endwise at the charging and discharging points in order to close the cages or to open them and allow the bottles to slide out. The bottles are held at rightangles to the path of the conveyer. The chains 29 are deflected by guide-wheels 31, 32, 33 at the charging and discharging end so that the cages are inclined at 45‹ as at 18<a>, Fig. 2, for discharging the bottles on to a conveyer 15, or for charging the cages from guide-rails or tilting platforms 20. Three forms of conveyer are described. As shown in Fig. 5, rollers 55 journaled on the cages run on guide-rails 54 and the chains 29 engage lugs on the cages. At the guide-wheels, the chains run over sprockets 57 and the rollers 55 engage recesses 59 in the wheels and also engage guard. rails 60. In another form (Fig. 6, not shown) rollers such as 55 are connected with the conveyer chains with their spindles free in slots in the cages. The rollers run on guide-rails and support the cages, but at the guide-wheels the necks of the cages engage a. ramp and guide-wheel which keep the cages at a sufficient radial distance on passing round the wheel. In another form (Fig. 7, not shown) the cages are carried on the conveyer chains, whilst the rollers are journaled in the cages and run on guide-rails, and are engaged by a reciprocating rack which propels the chains and cages step by step.
