Abstract
323,747. Lilienfeld, L. July 2, 1928. Cellulose xanthates, processes for making films from.-For the coagulation of viscose as in the manufacture of films, there is employed a caustic alkali solution of, for example, 18-65 per cent strength or an alkali sulphide solution of, for example, 30-100 per cent strength, in either case the solution being at a raised temperature of say 50-140‹ C. To the coagulation bath there may be added agents such as sodium chloride, sulphate, silicate, aluminate, zincate, phosphate, acetate, or thiosulphate, or borax; examples are given illustrating the use of caustic soda and sodium sulphide solutions saturated with sodium silicate, the solutions being maintained at 50-104‹ C. The duration of the treatment with the coagulation bath depends on the thickness of the film; after coagulation, the film is immersed in boiling water, is then washed with cold water, and is finally dried.
