Abstract

320,472. Whelan, W. Aug. 30, 1928. Screws, extracting; drills and cutters; ratchet braces; sockets. -A broken screw stud is removed by entering an extractor into a hole formed in the stud by a drill, the extractor having teeth formed to cut into the stud by successive surface milling and friction milling actions. The milling cutters are preferably made and used separately from the drill, and the two milling cutters are preferably made as a single tool. The tools may be mounted in a ratchet brace comprising a stem 7 with a threaded upper end 4 engaging the internally threaded box 1 and a square &c. part 5 engaging a ratchet wheel 22 operated by a lever 30 and. spring pawl 27. Drills of different sizes are provided according to the size of stud and of opposite hand to the latter and are secured in one or other of the sockets 9, 10 by grub screws 13, 14. The milling cutters have an oval spigot 16. secured in an oval hole 15 in the tool stem 7 by a screw 17, and are provided with teeth 20 on a conical part 18 merging into a rounded end 19, the teeth 20 are normal to the screw threads on the stump. The tool stem may be provided with a Morse taper top to fit the tool socket of drilling &c. machines. Fig. 13 shows a compound tool' comprising surface milling teeth 32<a> on a part 32, friction milling teeth 33<a> on a part 33 and a drill 31 fitted. therein and secured by a grub screw 34.
