Abstract
327,213. Oubridge, W. A. Jan. 12, 1929. Piston packing.- Piston rings are made by coiling a steel wire of square or other section. under tension, on a mandrel a, whose crosssection is bounded by cylcloidal involutes, then slitting the coil longitudinally and flattening and heating the split rings between electrode d prior to tempering in a bath e. The wire may be heated before, during, or after winding to relieve internal stresses. The wire may be hardened while in the coiled condition and subsequently slit to form the individual rings. In a further modification the coil is slit and each ring butt welded while on a mandrel of the required crosssection. The rings are then hardened, ground and split. The electrode may be flat or recessed to accommodate the ring, or the ring may be placed in a die between flat electrodes to prevent distortion during heating. Known mechanism may be used to convey the rings to and from the electrodes in a continuous process. Specification 135,249 is referred to.
