Printing-surfaces. - Polychromatic printing- blocks are made from composition consisting of an insoluble pulverulent substance, such as chalk, kaolin, talc, loam, or white lead, and a viscous adhesive colloidal substance free from fat and soluble in cold water, such as starch, honey, and sugar, fruit, or other syrups, to which the colouring matters and appropriate mordants and fixatives are added. Glycerine may be included in the composition. Individual coloured portions of the design are cut, punched, moulded, or pressed out from the coloured masses and made into a mosaic ; heated tools may be applied at the junctions to merge the colours. The surface to be printed upon is moistened with a mixture of water and alcohol, acetic acid, glycerine, &c.
