Abstract

316,436. Electrical Improvements, Ltd., and Grant, L. C. July 25, 1928. Protective or safety devices, auxiliary.- Alternating current dynamo-electric machines are protected against the effects of heavy sudden overloads on the stator B (which by reaction may cause a dangerous surge of high voltage in the D.C. rotor winding C supplied from the exciter E) by damping out or bye-passing the surge in the D.C. circuit or causing it to modify the rotor current circuit by introducing resistance. In the arrangement shown, the reactive surge in the D.C. exciting circuit causes the operation, through the current transformer F, of a relay G<1> which, momentarily, withdraws a shortcircuit from a series resistance H in the excitation circuit. In modifications, condensers or condensers and chokes are arranged in the excitation circuit to bye-pass the A.C. surge on the D.C. circuit.
