Abstract

293,745. General Motors Corporation, (Assignees of Jones, J. W., and McKinley, C. W.). July 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Filters having sheet filtering-materials.-A filter for the lubricating system of an internalcombustion engine of an automobile, has a head or cover provided with inlet and outlet passages connected by a valve-less bye-pass also formed in the head, through which a portion of the oil passes while the filter is operating and the full flow passes when the filter is clogged. The byepass may. be provided with a suitable restriction. In the form of apparatus shown, the inlet and outlet passages of the filter and the bye-pass are formed in a head 20 secured by bolts 34 to the cover 18 of the filter. Oil from a pipe 36 flows into the filter through passages 42, 44 and a hollow plug 22 to which the filtering medium 12 is secured. The filtrate leaves through passages 48, 52, 56 and a pipe 38. The passages 42, 56 are connected by a passage 69 with a restriction 72. A ball-valve 58 prevents return of filtrate from the passage 56 to the passage 52. The passage 52 is provided with a test cock 60. A single three-way valve may replace the valve 58 and cock 60.
